I acquired this eight from John E. Weinel, Inc. in 1989.
The Clog Small, Version A is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 144 mm. tall, 75 mm. wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 51 mm. high and 51 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. The shaft length and width are 45 mm. and 27 mm., respectively. The eye measures 25 mm. by 24 mm. My eight weighs 139 g.
The front of the shaft has "CLOG" in raised letters.
The Clog Small, Version A is a member of a family of nearly identical full-sized, forged, aluminum eights that includes the following eights:
|
|
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Each of these eights is 145±1 mm. tall and 76±1 mm. wide. These are normal manufacturing variations that have no practical significance.
These eight have plenty of metal, but there are some sudden corners on the shank that tend to make the eights grab on dirty rope. The corners will wear initially faster than the other parts of the eights. The hard-anodized eights should wear better than the others.
None of these eights have slots for sticht-type belaying, and their round eyes are not designed for that purpose.
The small Clog Version D and Version E eights have more rounded lower corners in the shaft indents than the other eights in the table.
The small Clog eights have a variety of markings. This table summarizes the differences:

The shaft length and width are 47 mm. and 27 mm., respectively. The eye measures 25 mm. by 25 mm. My eight weighs 148 g.

I do not have a record of when or where I acquired my first one of these. I suspect that it was in the early or mid 1980s. I acquired a second one from Colin Ware in 2024.
Version C is forged from aluminum alloy and then hard anodized. Mine is 144 mm. tall, 75 mm. wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 50 mm. high and 50 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. The shaft length and width are 47 mm. and 26 mm., respectively. The eye measures 25 mm. by 25 mm. My eight weighs 138 g.

I acquiredthis eight on eBay from Ron H. Clementi in 2021. I acquired a second one from Colin Ware in 2024.
Version D is forged from aluminum alloy and then hard anodized. Mine is 146 mm. tall, 77 mm. wide, and 16 mm. thick. The rope hole is 51 mm. high and 51 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. Why did I call this a different version than Version C when the only apparent difference is color? Hard anodized aluminum does not take dye easily, and so it is commonly left in its natural color. Hard anodized aluminums in the 6000 series, such as 6061, normally appear black, while those in the 7000 series, such as 7075, normally appear bronze-brown. I suspect a change in the alloy between Version C and Version D.

I acquired my Clog Small, Version F from Tony Howes in 2009.
Version F is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 145 mm. tall, 76 mm. wide, and 18 mm. thick. The rope hole is 50 mm. high and 50 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 13 mm. The shaft length and width are 47 mm. and 27 mm., respectively. The eye measures 25 mm. by 25 mm. My eight weighs 158 g.

I acquired this eight from Teton Mountaineering in 1980.
The Clog Large, Version A is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 167 mm. tall, 82 mm. wide, and 15 mm. thick. The rope hole is 55 mm. high and 55 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 14 mm. The shaft length and width are 64 mm. and 27 mm., respectively. The eye measures 22 mm. by 22 mm. My eight weighs 180 g.
The front of this eight is stamped with "CLOG" and "WALES."
This Clog is one of the large forged aluminum figure eights, and it is too large and heavy for my taste. Because of its large size and gentle curves, this eight provides a smooth rappel under most circumstances. One thing I don't like is that the inside of the eye (the lower hole) is rather sharp. Needless to say, it isn't suitable for "Sticht" belaying. The eye is also too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners.

I acquired this eight used from David Mellor in 2007.
The Clog Large, Version B is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 169 mm. tall, 83 mm. wide, and 14 mm. thick. The rope hole is 55 mm. high and 54 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 15 mm. The shaft length and width are 65 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 21 mm. by 21 mm. My eight weighs 209 g.
The front of this eight is stamped with "CLOG" and "WALES."
Version B is similar to Version A, except that the inside of the eye, although still having an angle, is not as sharp. Version B is noticeably thinner than Version A.

I acquired this large Clog eight on eBay from NOCO Gear in 2021.
This eight is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 169 mm. tall, 84 mm. wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 54 mm. high and 54 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 16 mm. The shaft length and width are 64 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 21 mm. by 21 mm. My eight weighs 233 g.
The front of this eight is stamped with "CLOG" and "WALES," and the letters are filled with red paint.
The inside of the eye no longer has a sharp edge. Instead, it is rounded with a very slight rib. The eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners.
Version C is noticeably thicker than Versions A and B.

I acquired this eight used from Edwin Crook in 2007. On Rope 1 donated another in 2021.
Version D is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 169 mm. tall, 83 mm. wide, and 16 mm. thick. The rope hole is 55 mm. high and 55 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 15 mm. The shaft length and width are 65 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 20 mm. by 20 mm. My eight weighs 204 g.
The front of this eight is stamped with "CLOG" and "WALES."
The inside of the eye has a rib and several ridges. The ridges look accidental but appear to be original. I have two eights that have the ridges, but I cannot explain them.
Version D is noticeably thicker than Versions A and B, thinner than C, and similar to the later versions.

The front of this eight is stamped with "CLOG" and "WALES."
This eight may be more than it appears to be. I noticed these odd marks toward the top of the shaft. It is obvious that someone tried to erase something here, and I think it was a Clog logo, much like the logo found on the earlier Clog Cosmic Arrestors. I've never seen this logo placed here on anoy other Clog eight.
Even though this eight may not want to self-identify as a Clog, it is what it is and it does, and nobody cares. I'm too old and too American to understand modern Welsh pop culture. Why would a Clog eighty denying who or what it is? Why would it do such a poor job making the denial?

The front is stamped with "CLOG," and the rear with "GREAT BRITAIN."
This Clog is also one of the large forged aluminum figure eights, and it is too large and heavy for my taste. The inside of the eye is rounded, unlike the eye in Version A, but still shouldn't be used for belaying. The eye is still too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners. The front is stamped with "CLOG," and the rear with "GREAT BRITAIN."
Version H is almost identical to Version G. Aside from minor dimensional differences that I can attribute to manufacturing tolerances (but yeild a urprising weight difference), the only difference is in the font used for the logo. This one uses a standard font while Version G uses a compressed (narrow) font (e.g., "CLOG" vs. "CLOG").
