Lever boxes are devices with the following four defining characteristics: (1) A body with a complex rope channel milled, cast, or otherwise formed into it, (2) a cover plate, (3) a lever that allows the rappeller to control the descent, yet automatically stops the descent if the rappeller lets go - at least in theory, and (4) a rope path that does NOT follow the S-shaped characteristic of bobbins, stop bobbins, and false bobbins (this allows me to call the SMC Spider a double-stop bobbin instead of a lever box). The enclosed rope path provides some protection, although it may be a liability in heavy mud. Lever boxes tend to be complex, and the corresponding manufacturing costs are reflected in their price.
