Technical Details

I acquired this eight from GearPro in 1999.

The BlueWater Rescue 8 is forged from aluminum alloy and then hard anodized. Mine is 171 mm. tall, 149 mm. wide, and 16 mm. thick. The rope hole is 60 mm. high and 76 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 13 mm. The shaft length and width are 67 mm. and 39 mm., respectively. The auxiliary hole is 18.2 mm. high and 21.2 mm. wide. The eye measures 19 mm. by 30 mm. The ears are 25.2 mm. long. My BlueWater Rescue 8 weighs 216 g.

The front of the shaft is forged with the BlueWater logo and "FORGED" in raised letters. The rear is stamped with "102004."

Comments

The BlueWater Rescue 8 is a typical example of a forged aluminum rescue eight. The eye doubles as a belay slot. The auxiliary hole doesn't have an obvious useful function (I don't have much need to clip carabiners there), and one wonders why it couldn't have been made larger by eliminating the logo area. The hard coating wears well. Like all rescue eights, this BlueWater Rescue 8 is too large and heavy for my taste.

The BlueWater Rescue 8 is not identical to the CMI Rescue 8, but they are obviously closely. If you compare the two side-by-side, several of the dimensions are different. From a performance perspective, these differences are not significant.

Comments

The BlueWater Mini Rescue 8 is a typical example of a "micro size" figure eight with ears. It is intended for emergency use only. It is essentially identical to the The SMC Personal Escape 8, except for the finish. The hard anodizing on the BlueWater is superior to the soft anodizing on the SMC. The BlueWater Mini Rescue 8 is lighter than most figure eights with ears. The rope hole is shorter than normal, so it may provide too much friction on stiff or muddy ropes. The eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners. See the description of the SMC for a longer discussion of the uses and limitations of these eights.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
