Technical Details

I acquired this Zaporizhzhian eight from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2025. It was made in Zaporizhzhia in the 1980s.

The Zaporizhzhian is cast from aluminum alloy. Mine is 134 mm. tall, 71 mm. wide, and 15 mm. thick. The rope hole is 49 mm. high and 49 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. The shaft length and width are 38 mm. and 27 mm., respectively. The eye measures 25 mm. by 25 mm. My eight weighs 110 g.

There are no clear markings on this eight. Raised portions of a circle in the shaft depression may be a faint logo, but might also be relics from the casting process.

Comments

The Zaporizhzhian's cast construction places it in my "other eights" category. The surface finish rules out forging. Placing the shaft indentation on one side only is for casting purposes.

From a size and shape perspective, it resembles to many standard full-sized forged eights and it performs similarly.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
