Technical Details

I acquired this eight on eBay from Cameron Dickinson in 2020.

This eight is cast from bronze. It is 166 mm. tall, 80 mm. wide, and 16 mm. thick. The rope hole is 52 mm. high and 51 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 17 mm. The shaft length and width are 63 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 21 mm. by 21 mm. My eight weighs 696 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This eight has no markings and was sold without any identification. I originally had little doubt that it is a Rocksport, and perhaps it is. The dimensions and bronze construction are virtually identical, but they are also about the same as the large Clog eights. In 2023 I learned that Karl Rohnke had made a limited number of brass or bronze eights that are dimensionally identical to this one, possibly using a Clog as a pattern. While this may not be one of Karl's, it is quite possible that it is not a Rocksport either.

This is one of the "other eights" that do not fit into my normal categories. It is far too heavy to use on a regular basis. It is thick enough that it "should never wear out," but it is also heavy - almost 700 grams! That makes it about 5 times as heavy as it should be and 16 times as heavy as the lightest eight in my collection (the CMI Ultra). Despite the Rocksport’s overall bulk, the eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
