Overview

History

Blacksmith Nicola Codega founded C.A.M.P. in 1889 to produce wrought-iron goods. The company first entered the climbing equipment business in 1920 when Nicola's son Antonio started making ice axes for the Italian Army Alpine Corps. The firm continued to grow and was handed down through the family.

From about 1950 through 1976, C.A.M.P. used a diamond-shaped logo bearing "D CN & FD CAMP" for "Ditta Cogenda Nicola & Figli De Cogedga Antonio Metilde Premana.

In 1968, C.A.M.P. entrusted Robert Charles Maillot and his firm Interalp to distribute C.A.M.P. products outside Italy. These products bore both C.A.M.P. and INTERALP logos. Their relationship continued until 1980.

C.A.M.P. changed its name to "Construzione Articoli Montagna Premana" in 1972.

In 1977 C.A.M.P. started using a new logo with "CAMP" inside a rounded rectangle above a mountain.

C.A.M.P. introduced a new wolfs-head logo in 1992.

C.A.M.P. acquired Cassin in 1997.

In 2003 C.A.M.P. again changed the company name, this time to "Concezione Articoli Montagna Premana, and changed their logo to CAMP in italics.

C.A.M.P. introduced another new logo in 2022.

Technical Details

Robert Gould donated this Camp plate in 2021.

The Camp is a sticht-type belay plate. It is forged from aluminum alloy. The unfinished plate is 11 mm. thick, and features two 29 mm. by 13.4 mm. slots. A 10 mm. wide, 1.8 mm. deep groove cuts across the each side of the plate, perpendicular to the slots.

This plate is stamped "CAMP ITALY."

Comments

This is another basic Sticht-type plate. It does not have a spring, making it smaller and eliminating the problems springs have with tangling with everything, but it does not feed as nicely as the sprung version. Personal preference decides which one to use.

Technical Details

I acquired my Camp, Version A from Bev Pearson in 2021.

Version B is 63 mm. long, 63 mm. wide, 45 mm. high, and weighs 86 g. The unfinished plate is 11 mm. thick, and features two 29 mm. by 13.5 mm. slots. A 10 mm. wide, 1.8 mm. deep groove cuts across the each side of the plate, perpendicular to the slots.

The Camp has a spring to help keep the plate away from the brake carabiner. This is not essential, but it simplifies feeding and taking in rope. The spring fits in a circular groove in the base of the plate and crimped in place, although the crimp is not immediately apparent.

This plate is stamped "CAMP."

Comments

The C.A.M.P., Version A is one of many round "Sticht" plates with springs. This table compares the ones in my collection. Colored shading (not white) in the "Belayer" column indicates different brand plates with particularly similar plate designs, excluding markings and finish.

The spring helps the plate release under load, helping the belayer. I prefer having the spring. Unfortunately, the springs have a tremendous capacity for tangling with other equipment on a climber's rack. If you can't find a way to prevent this - and I've tried - you will hete the spring as I do.

Sticht Plates came in many variations. Some had one slot, some had two. Some slots were sized for 9 mm. rope, some for 11 mm. My preference is for two-slot plates since they are lighter and more versatile. Choose one that matches the ropes that you will be using. My first Sticht Plate had one 11 mm. and one 9 mm. slot. One could use the same slot for both, and get different performance, but I like the different size slots. I'm often climbed with an 11 mm.lead line and a 9 mm.haul line, so this arrangement suited me well. It was s a good choice for most situations other than rappelling on double 11 mm. lines.

All of the plates listed in the table have considerable wear margin. The Cassin #221.02 has a particularly thick hard anodized finish. I slightly prefer the hard anodized GAB plates, but don't see a large advantage over any other anodized plate, or even the bare plates. I dislike the painted plates.

There are several methods used to attach the spring to the plate. They all seem to be equally effective, but the ones using a side groove seem more robust than the ones using bottom grooves.

Most of the Salewa plates have spring brackets. They hold the spring in the compressed position for carrying. Sometimes these are effective, but more often, I find them inadequate for their task.

The Single Rope Technique Equipment BPS is the only one without a hole for a keeper sling. I like having a keeper and having a hole to attach it instead of tying to the spring is nice. I would drill a hole in the BPS plate if I were going to use it much.

Many plates have a shallow groove across the top and bottom surfaces. The grooves don't seem to do much, in my opinion.

I acquired my Camp, Version C with spring used on eBay from Alec Rowley in 2008, and a second from Bev Pearson in 2021.

Version C is 63 mm. tall, 63 mm. wide, 44 mm. thick, and weighs 87 g.

Version C has "CAMP ITALY" stamped on top.

Comments

The only difference between this one and Version B, other than negligible dimensional and weight differences, are that the spring leaves the plate on opposite sides, and that Version B has a frosted finish. OK, I know it is nit-picking to call this a different version. I didn't collect this plate for the difference, I acquired it as part of a larger set, and the others were the ones that I was after. Now that I have it, though, I'll call it a different version, just for the fun of it.
