Technical Details

Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) sent me this Fish (Рыба) in 2023.

My Fish (Рыба) is 145 mm. tall, 53 mm. wide, 14 mm. thick, and weighs 51 g.

The Fish is milled from 8 mm. aluminum alloy plate. The top is bent to shape, and the descender is finally painted red.

There are no markings on my Fish.

RiggingComments

The top of the Fish is wide enough for 12 mm. rope, but it works better on 9 mm. line. Normally one rigs it in the free running configuration shown. This does not provide as much friction as I prefer, especially since the rope does not want to stay in the hook as it is shown in the figure. There are several alternative rigging methods available. The slot can be used to rig the Fish like a Sticht plate. This works, but the rope tends to bind somewhat. Another alternative is to use carabiners as brake bars in the bend, much like as with the Baechli or Yates Belay Slave. In my view, this would work better if the bend were placed farther below the end of the slot.

The Krok Petal is a similar milled descender. The earlier UZPS Petal inspired both of these, but I cannot recommend it because of its weaker construction. I don't see enough advantages of these devices to choose any of them for other than occasional experimental use.
