Technical Details

I acquired this eight new on eBay from Alan Leach in 2008.

The ASR Rescue 8 is milled from aluminum plate and then soft anodized. Mine is 162 mm. tall, 162 mm. wide, and 13 mm. thick. The rope hole is 43 mm. high and 74 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 13 mm. The central bar is 13 mm. high. The eye measures 67 mm. by 44 mm. The ears are 27 mm. long. My ASR Rescue 8 weighs 273 g.

The front of the shaft is stamped with the "ASR."

Comments

The Advanced Base Camp is an oddly-shaped a milled aluminum rescue eight. Like all rescue eights, this one is too large and heavy for my taste, but the shape is certainly the most unusual characteristic. The inverted triangular shape eliminates the traditional shaft, which is what keeps most eights from girth-hitching in use (ears or no ears). This one effectively runs on the ears, which makes me wonder why it had to be so wide to begin with. Whatever the reasons, they don't seem to follow what I've come to look for in an eight.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
