Technical Details

I made this eight from a Para-Gear parachute riggers’ weight in 1995.

My Rappel Wheel, Version A is 150 mm. tall, 150 mm wide, and 16 mm. thick. The rope hole is 46 mm. high and 65 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 16 mm. The shaft length and width are 28 mm. and 29 mm., respectively. The eye measures 46 mm. by 65 mm. The ears are 38.9 and 33.7 mm. long. My Rappel Wheel, Version A weighs 356 g.

The riggers’ weight that I used as raw material was painted with "22940" and "69B20624A."

Comments

While soberly wandering in the alcohol-infested haze of OTR a few years ago, someone showed me a rappel wheel. I acquired two riggers’ weights and made my own. This one was cut midway between ribs so it can be flipped end-to-end if one side starts to wear. Incidentally, with this design, the ears are almost superfluous, since the rope tends to run cleanly without tending to ride up and girth hitch.

Rappel Wheels fall into my miscellaneous figure eights with ears category.

Technical Details

I made this eight from a Para-Gear parachute riggers’ weight in 1995.

My Rappel Wheel, Version B is 150 mm. tall, 150 mm wide, and 16 mm. thick. The rope hole is 46 mm. high and 65 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 16 mm. The shaft length and width are 29 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 46 mm. by 65 mm. The ears are 66.8 mm long. My Rappel Wheel, Version B weighs 356 g.

The riggers’ weight that I used as raw material was painted with "22940" and "69B20624A."

Comments

Version B was cut to give longer horns, but only on one side, so it cannot be flipped once one side is worn.
