I acquired my Kirnoz from Gary Kirk in 2007.
The Kirnoz is made from welded steel rod. Mine is 119 mm. tall, 77 mm. wide, and 11 mm. thick. The rope hole is 59 mm. high and 55 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 11 mm. The shaft length and width are 20 mm. and 22 mm., respectively. The eye measures 19 mm. by 14 mm. The Kirnoz weighs 224 g.
The Kirnoz is a Welded Steel Rod Eight. Around 1965, Gary Kirk sketched the designs for some figure eights and had a machinist friend (John Nosler) make this eight (and one other). This makes it one of the earliest American-made figure eights on record. Gary’s sketches also show eights with rounded rope hole and eye, but John thought that the triangular version would be easier to make. This eight works well and locks off easily, but it is heavy. On the negative side, the eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners.
Gary told me that although John’s last name is Nosler, he and John named this the "Kirnoz" because the name "looked better with the Z."

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
