Technical Details

I acquired this eight from KHS Sales in 1990.

The Petzl D01 is forged from zicral (i.e., 7075 aluminum alloy) and then soft anodized. Mine is 141 mm. tall, 72 mm. wide, and 16 mm. thick. The D01 has a pentagonal rope hole. The rope hole is 48 mm. high and 50 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. A metal tab sticks up from the top center, and a screw holds a plastic finger grip over the tab. The shaft length and width are 36 mm. and 26 mm., respectively. The eye measures 20 mm. by 32 mm. My D01 weighs 110 g.

The front and back of the D01 have "PETZL" forged in raised letters.

Comments

Alternate riggingThe Petzl D01 is an example of a "Flat Top" aluminum eight, with a funny-looking tab on the top. When it was first explained to me, I started laughing in disbelief! I thought it was a joke, but according to the 1992 Petzl Catalog, "the anti-burn finger grip has already prevented many climbers from burning their fingers or dropping their ’8’." Below this is a drawing of a hand holding an eight that appears to be on fire.

OK, I have a better idea. Why not rappel slowly, and when the drop is long enough to need more heat dissipation, switch to a rack? Petzl sells them too. In my view, any device whose bulk temperature is hot enough to burn is probably hot enough at the rope contact to damage the rope.

Recently, I learned that Petzl has another idea for the tab - using it to increase friction by running the rope over the top of the eight. This doesn't seem to increase friction much, but when the rope slips off the tab, the sudden jolt might wake you up.

My suggestion is to treat this as a normal eight and ignore the tab. Aside from the tab, there is nothing strange or special about the D01. Enough said!

The Petzl D02 is forged from zicral (i.e., 7075 aluminum alloy). Mine is 124 mm. tall, 72 mm. wide, and 12 mm. thick. The rope hole is 48 mm. high and 49 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 13 mm. The shaft length and width are 36 mm. and 26 mm., respectively. The eye measures 20 mm. by 32 mm. My eight weighs 101 g.

The front of my D02 has "PETZL" forged in raised letters. The rear of the shaft has a sticker with "zicral forgé" and "3500 kg."

Comments

The Petzl D02 is a more typical example of a "Flat Top" aluminum eight.

Technical Details

I acquired this Petzl D02, Version B on eBay from Ernesto Puga in 2024. It was made in 1996.

The Petzl D02 is forged from zicral (i.e., 7075 aluminum alloy). Mine is 126 mm. tall, 73 mm. wide, and 12 mm. thick. The rope hole is 48 mm. high and 50 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. The shaft length and width are 36 mm. and 26 mm., respectively. The eye measures 20 mm. by 32 mm. My eight weighs 105 g.

The front of my D02 has "PETZL" forged in raised letters. The rear of the shaft has"35" and "KN" in raised letters with "03995F" stamped inverted in between.

Comments

The Petzl D02 is a more typical example of a "Flat Top" aluminum eight. The markings on the rear of the shaft are the only difference between this and the previous version.
