Technical Details

I acquired this well-used version from Len Zandee in 2005.

The body of the Safe-Waze GR100 is made from three irregular 2.5 mm. steel stampings. The left side and rear stampings are hinged with a roughly 8 mm. hinge pin. A J-shaped extension supports a 13 mm. long, 16 mm. diameter brass roller below the frame. The rear stamping swings to close with the right side with a 7/16-inch (10.8 mm.) knurled bolt. A lightweight safety pivots on the right side stamping to close the joint. Several pins link the two side plates. The top pin slides in a slot, and supports a 20.7 mm. smooth brass roller. The remaining pins are fixed rivets. The second pin supports a drag spring that runs in a groove in the roller, forcing the roller against the rope. The third pin provides a support for the opposite end of the drag spring. The fourth pin supports the cam and cam spring, and the fifth (lowest) pin supports the other end of the cam spring and also acts as a cam stop. The cam is made of 4 pieces of sheet steel riveted together. The inner two are recessed from the outer two to give a somewhat concave cam face. Each piece has six notches cut on the cam face to form cam teeth. A large steel stamping riveted between the outer cam plates forms an eye to tie in to.

The left side plate is stamped with an arrow pointing upwards and labeled "UP," "GR100," "MFG DATE" and "01A." The outside of the back plate has the following message:

USE ONLY 5/8" (16 M/M) DIA.
SYNTHETIC ROPE MIN. BREAKING
STRENGTH 6000 LBS (26.7KN)
MAX 3FT (0.9m) LANYARD. FAILURE TO
READ AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS COULD
RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
MADE IN CANADA

The inside of the back plate is stamped with an arrow pointing upwards and labeled "UP," The rear inside of the right side plate hinge has has the stamped message, "ENGAGE ON ROPE WITH ARROW POINTING UP."

Comments

The Safe-Waze is obviously related to the Komet Altochut, but there are numerous small differences. Most notable is the lower roller. The upper roller is smooth brass instead of knurled steel, and the cam teeth are slightly different.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
