Technical Details

I acquired this Chinese Grappling Hook from Zhong Zheng in 2013.

This Chinese Grappling Hook is 233 mm. tall, 78 mm. wide, 78 mm. thick, and weighs 766 g.

This is a collapsible grappling hook with four claws. The stainless steel shaft is 12 mm. diameter with a hand forged 16.2 mm. inner diameter ring at one end and threaded at the other. It is capped by a 36.7 mm. diameter, 5.7 mm. thick stainless steel cap that may be welded in place. It fits into a sleeve and spider assembly. The inside of the sleeve is threaded to match the shaft. Most of the sleeve length is turned down to 19 mm. diameter, while the upper 29 mm. is machined to form a spider for holding the arms. The spider supports four 6.4 mm. thick steel alloy claws that freely pivot on 7.5 mm. pins. The pins are held in place by external retaining rings. Each claw has a pointed tip.

The shaft and cap form a rotating locking mechanism. Loosening the latch mechanism allows the arms to open or close freely. Tightening locks them in the open or closed position as desired. The latch mechanism does not support any load during use, it merely holds the claws open while the hook is thrown and closed while it is stored.

The shaft sleeve is stamped "JY."

Warning:
Don't trust your life to a grappling hook.

Hand-forged hook shank ring shaped into a circle, but also oil quenching process using soft steel rims so that both, the latest design tetradentate fold increase carabiner Rims bold to 8MM, loading capacity of 400 kg.

Technical Details

I acquired Version B from Wang Wei Jie in 2015.

Version B is 180 mm. tall, 57 mm. wide, 34 mm. thick, and weighs 397 g.

This is a collapsible grappling hook with three claws. The stainless steel shaft is 10 mm. diameter with a 17 mm. inner diameter ring at one end and threaded at the other. It is capped by a 34 mm. diameter, 4.6 mm. thick stainless steel cap that may be welded in place. It fits into a sleeve and spider assembly. The inside of the sleeve is threaded to match the shaft. Most of the sleeve length is turned down to 17.6 mm. diameter, while the upper 23 mm. is machined to form a spider for holding the arms. The spider supports three 4.9 mm. thick steel alloy claws that freely pivot on 7.9 mm.

Comments

Although I got them separately and from different sources, Version B is clearly based on the same design as Version A. It differs by being slightly smaller and by having only three claws instead of four.

The seller listed the features as follows:

I like the size and weight of this one. It is well made, and could probably be trusted as much as I can trust a grappling hook:

Technical Details

I acquired my Chinese Grappling Hook, Version C from Bonnie Guoguo (郭 红柳) in 2015.

Version C is 142 mm. tall, 142 mm. wide, 128 mm. thick, and weighs 257 g. It consists of three round claws welded to a hand-forged shaft. The eye was made by flattening the shaft and bending it around a rod.

There are no markings on this grappling hook.

Comments

The seller reports that this is handmade from stainless steel. I note that it is magnetic, so I am not certain. The seller rates it for 100 kg, so this one should definitely not be used for life support.
