Technical Details

Don Shofstall gave me this vertical spool at the 1990 NSS Convention.

This spool is 190 mm. tall, 83 mm. wide, 56 mm. thick, and weighs 880 g.

Don Mulholland made this spool, probably in the late 1950s or early 1960s. He made it out of 1-1/2" (37 mm) galvanized steel pipe. There is a 7/16" (11 mm.) diameter spiral rope guide brazed on at each end, and two rope guides (probably scraps cut from the main pipe) brazed to the sides. A hole in the main pipe provides a place to clip in.

Comments

This spool was undoubtedly built for natural fiber ropes, most likely 5/8- or 3/4-inch (16 or 19 mm.). Faint wear marks suggest that it was normally used with two or three wraps. It looks like it was not used extensively, but steel pipe descenders barely wear when used with clean ropes. It works well, but like all vertical spools, it produces a spinning descent on free drops.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
