Technical Details

Ted Steinke gave me this spool in 2009.

This spool is 214 mm. tall, 103 mm. wide, 79 mm. thick, and weighs 849 g. The construction is all welded steel. The drum is 52 mm. of 22 mm. o.d. steel tubing with 1 103 mm. diameter, 3.4 mm. thick plate welded at each end, forming a flange. The arms are 25.4 mm. by 6.4 mm. steel, and extend 160 mm. below the centerline of the drum. Each arm has a 12.8 mm. eye near its distal end. One arm is straight and welded to the outside of one flange. The other has two bends that bring its distal end into contact with the other arm. The bent arm pivots on a 9.5 mm. hex-head bolt that passes through one the two flanges and a hole in the other arm, where it is welded in place.

Comments

Ted built this spool in 1962, modeling it after other spools in use in the Birmingham Indiana Grotto at the time. This spool’s simple mechanism works quite well. Offsetting the attachment point is a nice touch that helps prevent the spool from canting in use.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
