Technical Details

I acquired my Unknown "S," Version A from Bill Boehle at the 2008 Old Timer’s Reunion.

These are home-made racks. Version A is 278 mm. tall, 70 mm. wide, 21 mm. thick, and weighs 299 g. The frame is made from 9.5 mm. stainless steel bent into a U, with an internal width of 40 mm. here are 4 brake bars. The top and third bars are not slotted, while the second and fourth are. The bars are 19 mm. in diameter and 68 mm. long. Allowing 35 mm. for the rope gives a 153 mm. for spreading the bars.

Comments

Bill did not know who made these racks, but there was an "S" painted on the end of each brake bar.

Technical Details

I acquired my Unknown "S," Version B from Bill Boehle at the same time as Version A.

These are home-made racks. Version B is 286 mm. tall, 74 mm wide, 19 mm. thick, and weighs 325 g. The frame is made from 9.5 mm. stainless steel bent into a U, with an internal width of 43 mm. There are 4 brake bars. The top and third bars are not slotted, while the second and fourth are. The bars are 19 mm. in diameter and 68 mm. long. One side of the frame has spacers between the bars consisting of 50 mm. lengths of Tygon® tubing. Allowing 35 mm. for the rope and 151 mm. for the spacers gives a 25 mm. for spreading the bars.

Comments

Bill did not know who made these racks, but there was an "S" painted on the end of each brake bar.

The spacers on this rack are so long that the rack gives a rather fast rappel. I would prefer to shorten the top spacer, shorten or eliminate the second, and definitely eliminate the third.

The previous owner used this rack before filing a guide groove in the second (e.g.) brake bar, so the rope ran against the tubing, wearing it through in places. Don't do that.
