Technical Details

My father made this rack for me around 1975.

My Storrick Monster Rack rack is 354 mm. tall, 88 mm. wide, 28 mm. thick, and weighs 1179 g. The frame is made from 11.3 mm. stainless steel bent into a U, with an internal width of 51 mm. There are six brake bars made from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy square bar stock. The top three bars are 25.4 mm. square and the bottom three 19.1 mm.; all six are 88 mm. long. The bars are held in place by hex nuts that fit in counterbored hole in the top bar. Turned aluminum top posts sit above the nuts.

Aluminum spacers separate the top three bars. Allowing 35 mm. for the rope and 19 mm. for the spacers gives a 75 mm. for spreading the bars.

There are no markings on this rack.

Comments

Version A is the more practical of the two designs. I borrowed one of the 25 mm. (1 in) bars to put on my Mega-Rack, and replaced it with a 19 mm. (3/4 in) bar. I also deleted the superfluous tubular bar.

My father made this rack for me around 1975.

My Storrick Monster Rack rack is 354 mm. tall, 88 mm. wide, 28 mm. thick, and weighs 1179 g. The frame is made from 11.3 mm. stainless steel bent into a U, with an internal width of 50 mm. There are five brake bars made from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy square bar stock, and one from tubing with a 1.2 mm. wall thickness. The top four bars are 25.4 mm. square, the next two are 19.1 mm. square, and the round bottom bar is 19 mm. diameter; all seven are 88 mm. long. The bars are held in place by hex nuts that fit in counterbored hole in the top bar. Turned aluminum top posts sit above the nuts.

Aluminum spacers separate the top three bars. Allowing 35 mm. for the rope and 19 mm. for the spacers gives a 50 mm. for spreading the bars.

There are no markings on this rack.

Comments

I patterned these racks after Kyle Isenhart’s Super Rack design (The Nylon Highway #1), which was later commercially produced by as Speleoshoppe’s Superack. My bars were slightly longer, so Bob Elron gave it the name MonsteRack. The frame is 304 stainless steel and the bars are 6061-T6 aluminum. Originally I had four 25 mm. (1 in) square bars and a lightweight tubular bar, but I found that the rack didn't have enough friction, so I added two more 19 mm. (3/4 in) square bars. This combination works better, but Version A is a further improvement.

The top posts do not support any weight - that is done by the stainless steel nuts recessed into the top bar.
