I made Deadly Eight in 2023.
My Deadly Eight is 145 mm. tall, 75 mm. wide, 16 mm. thick, and weighs 125 g.
Stéphane Dupont commented on one of my Facebook posts with a picture of his “deadly eight mod.” I thought that was a great name and so I elevated it to a proper noun. I immediately ordered two Fusion figure eights – the cheapest on Amazon that day – so that I could modify them for myself. I used one to copy Stéphane’s modification by simply removing a section at the one-o'clock position.
Stéphane's idea was that this trivializes removing the eight from the rope in situations where this is important; for example, when rappelling into fast-moving water. The disadvantage is that the Deadly Eight can come off the rope easily when this is not desirable. This is particularly likely as one is starting their descent. For this reason, I cannot recommend this modification.

I made Deathly Eight in 2023.
My Deathly Eight is 145 mm. tall, 75 mm. wide, 16 mm. thick, and weighs 129 g.
After cutting a slot in a second Fusion eight, I drilled and tapped it to accept two partially threaded 4 mm. stainless-steel pins.
Stéphane inspired me to try a modification that, on a good day, might keep the rope in the device with marginally greater reliability. If the rope comes out while rappelling, well, then it probably is not a good day for the rappeller.
Stéphane’s suggestion of adding a wire gate would be better if you want to avoid the implications of failing to resist gravity’s attractiveness.
Making the newer version was easy and did not take long, but finding a name for it was challenging. I wanted something that sounded less ominous but still conveyed an appropriate sense of impending carnage. I also wanted a name that followed “Deadly Eight” in alphabetical order, but not too far after that something else would lie between. It took me two weeks, but in a momentary cessation of unimaginative incompetence, I found a suitable name: “Deathly Eight.”
