Technical Details

InstructionsI acquired this eight from Young Manufacturing in 2004.

My small Young Manufacturing Rescue Safe 8 is 148 mm. tall, 76 mm. wide, 33 mm. thick, and weighs 181 g.

The bodies of the Rescue Safe 8s are similar to traditional figure eights, but they have a pivoting "rope keeper" that keeps the rope from girth hitching. The body of the eight is made from 7075-T6 aluminum and the rope keeper from 6061-T6; both hard anodized. The remaining springs, screws, and pins are made from 302 stainless steel. The rope keeper is a spring-loaded, "6"-shaped arm that pivots on a hinge pin set in a slot milled just below the center of the rope hole. A cover plate on the reverse side of the body covers the mechanism. I haven't removed this plate to see the internal workings for fear that "parts might go flying" <gin>. The lower (closed) end of the "6" fits into another slot milled just above the eye, where a spring-loaded bullet pin holds it in place. The bullet pin and spring are held by an Allen screw that enters from the side. There is one small hole drilled through the body and two blind holes above. These appear to be alignment holes for manufacture, since they have no apparent function.

The front of the eight is engraved "RESCUE SAFE 8." The rear is engraved "US PAT PEND" and "8000 lb."

Comments

RiggingThe Rescue Safe 8 is well-made. The rope keeper on my small version is quite stiff, and I have trouble opening it. I could adjust the Allen screw that compresses the spring, or I could just wait until it breaks in and wear loosens the action, but for now, it is rather annoying.

The instructions from Young Manufacturing state that the small Rescue Safe 8 is for single rope rappels.

The Rescue Safe 8 is protected by U.S. Patent #6,959,783.

InstructionsI acquired this eight from Young Manufacturing in 2004.

My large Young Manufacturing Rescue Safe 8 is 161 mm. tall, 92 mm. wide, 32 mm. thick, and weighs 204 g. Aside from size, it is identical to the small version.

The front of the eight is engraved "RESCUE SAFE 8." The rear is engraved "US PAT PEND" and "9000 lb."

Comments

The rope keeper on my large version is quite comfortable to operate - it shows no sign of the stiffness that I find on my small one.

The instructions from Young Manufacturing state that the large Rescue Safe 8 is for double rope rappels.
