Technical Details

PaulMacLeman sent me his Pitt Stop in May 2001

Version A is 90 mm. tall, 72 mm. wide, 61 mm. thick, and weighs 154 g. The body is milled from an aluminum alloy extrusion and then hard anodized. The horns are cut from a second extrusion, soft anodized, and then fastened to the body with a Phillips head machine screw.

The horns on this Pitt Stop are stamped "PITT STOP," "PFH P/L," and "SYDNEY." The body has a stamped rigging illustration.

Comments

The PFH Pitt Stop is basically an oversized brake bar. The body is milled from an aluminum extrusion, and hard anodized for longer life. A second extrusion is cut to form the horns. These fit tightly into a notch cut in the end of the body and are held in place by a Philips-head machine screw. Overall, one has to say that the Pitt Stop is rugged.

The Pitt Stop is large, and works with most carabiners, although in many cases it puts an undesirable side load on the carabiner gate. The carabiner hole is 19.3 mm. in diameter. Although this makes it easy to mount the Pitt Stop on the carabiner spine instead of the gate, it is so large that it doesn't really control the orientation of the Pitt Stop on the carabiner. The horns are a nice feature that makes tying off easy. Rappelling with the Pitt Stop can be an accelerating experience - as any single brake bar rappel tends to be. I prefer to have more friction, and I can imagine rappelling with two Pitt Stops (like double brake bars).

Technical Details

I acquired my PFH Pitt Stop, Version B from Inner Mountain Outfitters at the 2001 NSS Convention.

Version B is 90 mm. tall, 72 mm. wide, 61 mm. thick, and weighs 154 g. The body is milled from an aluminum alloy extrusion and then hard anodized. The horns are cut from a second extrusion, soft anodized, and then fastened to the body with a Phillips head machine screw.

The horns on this Pitt Stop are stamped "PITT STOP," "PFH P/L," and "SYDNEY." The second one has a rigging illustration and the following chart stamped on the front of the body:

ROPE TO KARABINER SIZE CHART
DOUBLE 9 mm
SINGLE 11 mm
INSIDE DIMENSION
82 mm. OR 3 1/2"
DOUBLE 11 mm 89 mm. OR 3 1/2

The rear of the body is stamped with "1000 kg ON ALLOY CRAB" and "1400kg ON STEEL CRAB."

Comments

The two versions are functionally identical, only the markings differ.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
