Technical Details

I acquired my Rock Exotica ockGrab RG2 from Hanny Piltz in 2012.

My Rock Exotica rockGrab RG2 is 61 mm. long, 74 mm. wide, 33 mm. high, and weighs 127 g.

The frame and cam are milled from aluminum. The frame’s rope channel is square rather than U-shaped, and the cam face is not contoured either. Neither of these aspects hurts the rockGrab’s performance to any significant degree. Excess metal is milled out of each side, and all edges are well-rounded. The inside of the shell has a milled depression that the cam forces the rope into. This spreads the load on the rope, and may increase the holding power of the rockGrab. The top of the rope channel is rounded off so that the rope does not bend over any sharp corners.

The cam has 8 rounded teeth. It rides on a pin that is held by two Allen set screws. A hole in the top of the cam admits a 1.7 mm. cable, and an Allen set screw holds it in place. The other end of the cable is fixed to the body in a similar manner. The cable doubles as a cam keeper and a surprisingly good cam spring. The rockGrab is unlikely to slide down the rope when unweighted.

One side is printed with "11207H," "0029," "rock exotica," and "usa." The other side is printed with the Reading-Is-Dangerous icon, a cam icon, "9≤Ø≤13mm," "Up/Load," and an up-pointing arrow.

Comments

The ascender body is milled from an aluminum block, making it rugged to extremes, but by milling excess metal away, Rock Exotica was able to keep the weight within reason.

Technical Details

I acquired my Rock Exotica rockGrab RG2-90 from Hanny Piltz in 2012.

My Rock Exotica rockGrab RG2-90 is 67 mm. long, 74 mm. wide, 33 mm. high, and weighs 137 g. The main difference between this rockGrab and the RG2 is that the eye on this one is turned 90°.

One side is printed with "11348M," "0038," "rock exotica," and "usa." The other side is printed with the Reading-Is-Dangerous icon, "Not for Vertical Ascent," a cam icon, "9≤Ø≤13mm," "Lanyard Snap" and an up-pointing arrow.

Comments

The "Not for Vertical Ascent" prohibition is interesting. I don't see why the RG2-90 could not be used for ascent (ascents are vertical), but the 90° eye would not be convenient.

Technical Details

I acquired my Rock Exotica rockGrab RG4-90 from Hanny Piltz in 2012.

My Rock Exotica rockGrab RG4-90 is 37 mm. long, 99 mm. wide, 66 mm. high, and weighs 231 g. The RG4-90 is a larger version of the RG2-90. The cam has ten teeth instead of eight.

One side is printed with "11097J," "0038," "rock exotica," and "usa." The other side is printed with the Reading-Is-Dangerous icon, "Not for Vertical Ascent," a cam icon, "13≤Ø≤16mm," "Lanyard Snap" and an up-pointing arrow.

Comments

The larger version is made for larger ropes used by the bigger-is-better crowd.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
