Technical Details

I acquired this well-used version from Lee Pyell in 2007.

The The RidgeGear is a type-I lever-type rope grab. Mine is 94 mm. tall, 86 mm. wide, and 23 mm. thick, and it weighs 327 g. The shell is made from two irregular pieces of 3 mm. type 304 stainless steel. The rear piece is bent forward on the left side to form a U-shaped rope channel, while the front piece is flat. A 12.8 mm. gap provides a rope access channel. Three riveted pins hold the pieces together. The lower pin is at the right-hand corner of the device. This pin has a 14.8 mm. long central portion that is 8 mm. in diameter, and 3 mm. extensions on each end that are 7 mm. These are peined over to act as countersunk rivet heads. The second pin is centrally located about 31 mm. above the base of the device. An aluminum cam pivots on this pin. The third pin is at the top, and supports a coil spring. that acts on the cam and on the safety.

There are two pins near the top right side of the rope channel that are attached only to the rear plate. The lower one supports a stamped steel safety. The coil spring rotates the safety counterclockwise so that a tab blocks the top of the rope channel. The other end of the safety is bent back and down, then extends left to engage the spring. This portion also contacts the second pin, which keeps the safety from over-rotating. This pin also has a piece of stainless tubing on it that acts as a roller.

The cam is forged aluminum. The cam surface is concave, but in a direction perpendicular to what one would expect. The distal end of the cam has a 15.5 mm. attachment hole. A protrusion on the top of the cam contacts the second end of the coil spring. The spring acts to close the cam.

The front plate is stamped with an arrow labeled with "UP," "HAUT," "AUF," and "ALTO;" "USE ONLY ROPE," UTILISER SEULEMENT CORDE," "GEBRAUCHEN NUR SIEL," and "USAR SOLO CORDA" to the left of "}Ø11;" "RidgeGear;" "CE0639," "EN 353-2," "SKR," "-," "BLOCK," "Patented," a book with an exclamation point icon,"MADE IN EEC," "INOX AISI 304," and "Batch 030-0067-12."

Comments

The The RidgeGear is nicely made, convenient to use, and reasonably light for a rope grab.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
