Technical Details

I acquired this Vertical (Вертикаль) Block-clamp from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2022

This Block-clamp is 127 mm. tall, 78 mm. wide, 32 mm. thick, and weighs 352 g.

Cam faceThe side plates are irregular shaped stampings made from 3.2 mm. sheet steel, painted black. They are bent inward at the top, where they touch. A 15.8 mm. eye is punched thorough each plate.

The lower portion of the shell supports the pulley assembly. The sheave is a 15 mm. wide steel U-grooved turning with a 38 mm. major diameter. A rounded rope groove reduces the central (minor) diameter to 25.6 mm. The sheave rides on a 9 mm. steel axle made from a semi-tubular rivet. The sheave has a bearing whose details I cannot see without destroying the device.

There is an eccentric cam attached to an axle riveted to the right side of the rear plate. The cam is a plated skeletonized steel casting. The cam radius increases from 38 to 55 mm. over an angle of 32°, giving a 34° cam angle. The cam has number of small conical teeth. The teeth have their axes sloping downward. The tooth pattern is (3.4)(1S1.2S2)^2(1S1)^2(3) where the S stands for a single slot. A spring-loaded hold-open pin is mounted on an extension below the main cam body. A tab punched in the rear plate serves as a cam stop.

There are no markings on this pulley.

Comments

This is a moderately heavy, moderately large pulley that is crudely executed; however, the shape is more streamlined than that on the later version.

The spring-loaded steel cam uses the same casting as the cam on their chest ascenders and handled ascenders.

This Block-clamp is 107 mm. tall, 90 mm. wide, 38 mm. thick, and weighs 356 g.

The lower portion of the shell supports the pulley assembly. The sheave is a 14.1 mm. wide steel U-grooved turning with a 37 mm. major diameter. A rounded rope groove reduces the central (minor) diameter to 25.8 mm. The sheave rides on a 6 mm. steel axle made from a semi-tubular rivet. The sheave has a bearing whose details I cannot see without destroying the device.

There is an eccentric cam attached to an axle riveted to the right side of the rear plate. The cam is a plated skeletonized steel casting. The front plate is printed with a strength rating illustration for pulley use (8 kN per side, 16 kN total), the Vertical logo, and "VERTICAL."

Comments

This newer version with pins instead of bent tabs is better executed than the earlier one; however, I find the new shape to be somewhat bulkier. In practice, I don't notice much difference.
