I acquired my Petzl Tuba from Michiel Lofton in 2013.
The Petzl Tuba (model D12) is made from two pieces of aluminum tubing welded together. A rod safety ensures that the rope stays on the spool. The closure (in red) is threaded on the lower side (as shown). There are no threads on the upper guide piece. Since this piece is not loaded, there is no need for the strength that threads would provide, and threads that aren't there can't be exposed to damage. The maximum opening is about 17 mm., large enough for any reasonable rope. The eye loop is welded stainless steel, so it cannot come out of the tube. My Petzl Tuba is 273 mm. tall, 153 mm. wide, 79 mm. thick, and weighs 1161 g.
The gate is printed with the Petzl Logo, "07053UJ0056," "MEETS NFPA 1983 (06 ED), "G(GENERAL USE)," "MBS 22kN," "ROPE Ø 13 MM," the UL "CLASSIFIED" logo, and "45YF."
The Tuba can be rigged as a horizontal spool. In this arrangement it gives excellent control and induces little to no rope twisting. It can also be rigged as a vertical spool, but this will twist the rope more.
Petzl bought the rights to many Rock Exotica’s products, including the Rock Exotica Brake Tube that was the forerunner of the Tuba. The primary difference is that the Tuba has a polished finish.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
