Technical Details

I acquired this belay plate from Shawn Hinz in 2004.

This is a sticht-type belay plate, forged from aluminum alloy and unfinished. It is 60 mm. long, 58 mm. wide, 11 mm. high, and weighs 60 g. It has two slots, one for 9 mm. rope and one for 11 mm., that are 27 and 32 mm. long, respectively.

There are no markings on this plate.

Comments

I acquired this plate from Shawn Hinz in 2004. It has no markings on it, so I did not know who made it. It is a stamped plate, and the metal and dimensions made me suspect it is an early Salewa Sticht Plate, but all my other Salewa Sticht Plates have markings on them. When I acquired Version B in 2022, I decided to assume that this one was also a Viking plate, as the two are identical other than Version B is stamped with "VIKING."

Technical Details

I acquired my Viking, Version B from James Giant in 2022.

Version B is a sticht-type belay plate. It is forged from aluminum alloy and unfinished. Mine is 60 mm. long, 58 mm. wide, 11 mm. high, and weighs 65 g. It has two slots that are 27 and 32 mm. long.

One side is stamped "VIKING."

Comments

This is a simple plate - no frills, no waste. I like it.

Technical Details

I acquired my Viking Dynabrake from Jene Mercer in 2012.

The Dynabrake is a sticht-type belay plate, forged from aluminum alloy and unfinished. Mine is 60 mm. long, 65 mm. wide, 14 mm. high, and weighs 75 g. It has two curved slots that are 30 mm. long.

Each side has a raised forged Viking logo, and "DYNABRAKE" and "DOUBLE/SINGLE ROPE" in raised forged letters.

Comments

The Dynabrake most closely resembles the DMM Betterbrake, but they are not the same.

The Dynabrake lacks a separate hole for attaching a keeper cord, an omission that I find to be annoying.

The curves in the slots do not provide any real functional benefit that I recognize.
