I acquired my MSR Belay Link, Version A from Mountain Safety Research around 1982. I acquired a second from Mark Schneider on eBay in 2018.
The MSR Belay Link, Version A is a welded aluminum chain link. Mine is 36 mm. long, 53 mm. wide, 10 mm. high, and weighs 22 g. It has one slot that is 35 mm. long.
There are no markings on this device.
MSR once made a chain link out of aluminum that was significantly lighter than the hardware-store chain link. There is not a lot of margin for wear on this device, and there is no coating to retard the wearing process.

I acquired my MSR Belay Link, Version B from Steve Hotchkiss in 2007.
Version B is 38 mm. long, 50 mm. wide, 11 mm. high, and weighs 25 g. It has one slot that is 31 mm. long.
There are no markings on this device.
Version B was anodized. According to MSR, "The anodized red color is for better visibility. Sometimes it flakes off next to the weld, but this is not detrimental."
MSR tested the belay link by sawing the weld out completely, and it "still held 1600 pounds. This is far above the forces in the link in belay use." I do not recommend trying this yourself.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
