Technical Details

I acquired my SMC Spire from Great Trango Holdings in 2015.

My Spire is 80 mm. long, 44 mm. wide, 68 mm. high, and weighs 57 g. It is milled from aluminum alloy and then soft anodized. It has two34 mm. long, 11.4 mm. wide slots. One end of the slot has a semicircular U-shaped notch, and the other tapers downward, lengthening the slot slightly. There is an 18.3 mm. diameter eye and a smaller 15.3 mm. by 10.9 mm. hole beside it. Finally, the Spire has a plastic-covered cable keeper.

The front is printed with a roped lizard icon, the SMC logo, a hand-holding-a-rope icon, "Made in USA,’ "SPIRE," and "RopeØ7.5-10.7mm." The rear is printed with "Pat. Pend.," the UIAA logo, "MLN 10304," a rigging illustration, "Guide Assist Mode," "Ø>8.9mm Only," and the Reading-Is-Dangerous icon.

Comments

The spire is small and light, and will overheat easily for that reason. The notches are too rounded to effectively increase friction. I find it a bit fast for my taste.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
