Technical Details

I acquired my Mammut Smart from Mountain Gear in 2009.

This Mammut Smart is 123 mm. tall, 58 mm. wide, 22 mm. thick, and weighs 81 g. It consists of two cylindrical pins and a plastic handgrip riveted between two side plates. The top surface of the handgrip is recessed below the edges of the side plates, forming a flat-bottom channel for the rope to run in.

One side of my Smart is printed with "MAMMUT," the Mammut logo, and "0108." The other side is printed with "MAMMUT," a rigging illustration a book-with-an-"i" icon, "ø8.9-10.5mm," and "Made in Italy."

Comments

The Mammut Smart is similar to the Camp Yo-yo, Salewa Antz and Wild Country Single Rope Controller. A bight is inserted into the left side (as shown) of the controller, and an HMS carabiner is clipped through the slots and the bight. The HMS is anchored appropriately. Rope is fed by turning the Smart horizontally (clockwise). During a fall, the Smart rotates toward the handle-down position, and the rope is wedged between the HMS carabiner and the lower pin. The belayer can fed rope by lifting the red arm. This upward motion is different than the downward one used with the Camp Yo-yo and Wild Country Single Rope Controller, but they both work. The long handle on the Smart helps make the lifting motion easier.

Technical Details

I acquired my Mammut Smart 2.0 on eBay from Evaton.s.r.o in 2018. I acquired a second from NetRush on Amazon.com in 2019, and used that one to mount my Smarter.

The Mammut Smart 2.0 consists of a rope guide block, and a cylindrical pin, and a plastic handgrip riveted between two side plates. The top surface of the handgrip is recessed below the edges of the side plates, forming a flat-bottom channel for the rope to run in. My Smart 2.0s are 116 mm. long, 67 mm. wide, 22 mm. high, and weigh 80 g.

One side of my Smart 2.0 is printed with "MAMMUT," rigging illustrations, "SMART2.0," and "Ø8.7-10.5mm." The other side is printed with "MAMMUT," rigging illustrations, "EN 15151-2," "UIAA," a book-with a book-with-an-"i" icon, and "0117 k17" ("0218 E13" on the second one).

Comments

The Mammut Smart 2.0 is similar to the Smart and functions the same way. I don't notice any difference due to the change in the frame shot shape. The primary functional difference is that the 2.0 allows mounting the Mammut Smarter.

Technical Details

I acquired my Mammut Smarter from Shoe Annex in 2019.

This Mammut Smart is 65 mm. long, 22.5 mm. wide, 30 mm. tall, and weighs 12 g. The Smarter is an attachment for the Smart 2.0. It consists of a spring-loaded aluminum cover that attaches with a plastic block that clips to the Smart 2.0. There is a non-load-bearing loop that can be used to clip the Smarter to the harness when it is not attached to the Smart 2.0.

The top of my Smart is stamped with "MAMMUT."

Comments

The Mammut Smarter is always used with the Smart 2.0. When attached, it increases the combined size to 122 mm. long, 71 mm. wide, and 22 mm. high. The combined weight is 93 g.

In use, the tab on the end of the cover separates the entry and exit ropes. The cover remains closed during use, and is only opened for rigging.

With the exception of the illustrations, the documentation provided with the Smarter does not explain how to use it or why it is needed. I cannot see a need for it, and as the Smart 2.0 is sold without the Smarter and works fine without it, I cannot see a need to bother with the extra weight.

Technical Details

I acquired my Mammut Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5 from Mountain Gear in 2011.

My Mammut Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5 is 121 mm. long, 60 mm. wide, 35 mm. thick, and weighs 118 g. It consists of two side one central 3.0 mm. anodized aluminum plates separated by two pairs of 11.9 mm. long, 7.9 mm. diameter cylindrical rollers, a pair of 11.8 mm. long, 14.9 mm. end/12.5 mm. center diameter U-groove cylindrical rollers, and a plastic handgrip. The top surface of the handgrip is recessed blow the edges of the side plates and has two longitudinal round-bottom grooves, forming a round-bottom channel for the rope to run in. The central rib has a 19.0 mm. carabiner eye for carrying.

One side of my Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5 is printed with "MAMMUT," a rigging illustration, and "02-10." The other side is printed with "MAMMUT," a rigging illustration a book-wit-an-"i" icon, "ø7.5÷9.5mm," and "made in Italy."

Comments

The Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5 is a double-rope version of the Smart, designed for ropes in the 7.5 to 9.5 mm. range.

ComparisonTechnical Details

I acquired my Mammut Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5 from Mountain Gear in 2011.

My Mammut Smart Alpine 8.9-10.5 is 120 mm. long, 61 mm. wide, 38 mm. thick, and weighs 118 g. It consists of two side one central 3.0 mm. anodized aluminum plates separated by two pairs of 13.7 mm. long, 7.9 mm. diameter cylindrical rollers, a pair of 11.8 mm. long, 14.9 mm. end/12.5 mm. center diameter U-groove cylindrical rollers, and a plastic handgrip. The top surface of the handgrip is recessed blow the edges of the side plates and has two longitudinal round-bottom grooves, forming a round-bottom channel for the rope to run in. The central rib has a 19.0 mm. carabiner eye for carrying.

One side of my Smart Alpine 8.9-10.5 is printed with "MAMMUT," a rigging illustration, and "02-10." The other side is printed with "MAMMUT," a rigging illustration a book-wit-an-"i" icon, "ø8.9÷10.5mm," and "made in Italy."

Comments

The Smart Alpine 8.9-10.5 is a double-rope version of the Smart, designed for ropes in the 8.9 to 10.5 mm. range. It differs from the Mammut Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5 by having a slightly larger separation between the plates. I find it interesting that the spacing of the rollers is the same.

The comparison photo shows, from left to right, the Smart, Smart Alpine 8.9-10.5, and Smart Alpine 7.5-9.5.
