Technical Details

Carroll Bassett gave me this small belay spool in 2023.

This prototype is 139 mm. long, 77 mm. wide, 42 mm. thick, and weighs 522 g.

This prototype is made from 304 stainless steel, The frame is 12.7 mm. 304 stainless steel. A cross-bar provides a D-shaped eye. The tube is 77 mm. long, 42 mm. in diameter, and has a 2.5 mm. wall thickness. The tube is not welded to the frame, but it does not slide. Friction and the shape of the frame hold the tube in place.

There are no markings on this belay spool.

Comments

Unlike the larger Bassett Metal Studios Belay Spools, the small ones on this page do not open for rigging. One needs the free end of the rope to rig these.

These can be used as shear reduction devices to redirect a line. They do not create the sharp rope bend that a carabiner would.

The cross-bar is not needed for strength, but it can keep the rope from running over whatever is attached to the eye.

The small dimensional differences a different finish do not affect the relative performance of Version B versus Version A.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
