Technical Details

My father made two of these for me in 1971.

The Storrick thin shell is 92 mm. tall, 55 mm. wide, 42 mm. thick, and weighs 294 g. The shell is formed from 2.4 mm. stainless steel. The cam was cut from tool steel and hardened. The cam has eight semicircular grooves and eight semicircular teeth. The axles are 1/4 inch stainless steel bolts with hex and wing nuts.

Comments

My father made these for me in 1971. They are copied after a photo of the early Gibbs ascender; neither of us had seen the real thing at the time. I never measured the cam hardness, but when I tried to file the inside of the eye, I dulled the file without affecting the cam. Suffice it to say, these heavy cams wear very well.

This bolt and nuts axle takes far to long to assemble and disassemble.

Technical Details

My father made two of these for me in 1971.

The Storrick thick shell is 90 mm. tall, 55 mm. wide, 42 mm. thick, and weighs 333 g. The shell is formed from 3.2 mm. stainless steel.

Comments

This pair is identical to the first except the shell thicker. This was too thick to form easily, which is why the other pair uses thinner steel.

I elongated the axle hole to allow the ascender to function on larger rope.
