Technical Details

Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) gave me this Vertical (Вертикаль) Emergency Mini Clamp (Зажим аварийный Мини) in 2022.

The Vertical (Вертикаль) Emergency Mini Clamp (Зажим аварийный Мини) is 52 mm. tall, 38 mm. wide, 17 mm. thick, and weighs 42 g.

The design uses a U-shaped cast steel shell with a diagonal slot. A carabiner fits into the slot, and when the climber’s weight is applied, the carabiner slides downward with respect to the shell, wedging the rope and providing enough friction to support the climber’s weight. The inside of the ascender has numerous down-sloping conical teeth in a (3.2.2.3.2)((1S1)^3)^2(2) pattern to ensure that the shell does not slide downward when weight is applied.

There are no markings on this ascender.

Comments

The Emergency Mini Clamp is a copy of the original Petzl Tibloc. The casting is not as fine, nor is it plated. The teeth are not sharp like they are on the Tibloc.

Misuse will damage the rope. Like the Tibloc, this ascender must be set firmly so that most of the teeth are engaged; otherwise it will slide down the rope, tearing the sheath in the process.

The slots between the teeth are narrow, and not particularly effective in relieving cave mud - but then again, I've never seen slots or holes on ascender teeth that are.

Although I have no use for either, preferring a simple RBS knot in cases where these would be most useful, I cannot recommend my rare Vertical copy over the readily-available Petzl original.
