Technical Details

I acquired my Petzl Chicane from The Safe Path on Amazon.com in 2019.

The Petzl Chicane is 85 mm. tall, 30 mm. wide, 212 mm. thick, and weighs 248 g.

The chicane consists of a fixed plate with two attached bollards, a swinging side plate, a latch mechanism, and a spring-loaded handle. The plates are stamped from 3.8 mm. aluminum alloy and then soft anodized. They are flared outwards at the top, and the fixed plate is also flared outward outside the two bollards. The bollards are turned from stainless steel and attached to the fixed plate with Round head hex socket machine screws. The top bollard is longer, and has a turned notch that engages a notch in the swinging plate. The latch mechanism is plastic, with two hexagonal plastic buttons that engage similarly shaped holes in the swinging side plate. The swinging plate and handle pivot on a pin riveted to the fixed plate.

The swinging plate is printed with the Petzl logo and a rigging illustration, and is stamped with "CHICANE" and a book-with-an-"i" icon. The rear plate is printed with a complex diagram indicating that a Zigzag or Zigzag Plus + a Chicane = (nothing?), "CE," "0082," "EAC," "TP/TC019/2011," "PATENT PENDING," "PETZL F - 38920 Crolles," "Cidex 105A, "19D0185760478," and a scanner code. It is also stamped with a hollow up-pointing arrow with "UP" inside. The front of the handle has a printed rigging illustration.

Comments

The Chicane is used with either a Zigzag or Zigzag Plus, never alone. Among its features, it allows either of those devices to function on single rope. The Chicane was designed for arborist. I am not Tarzan, so I won't comment on its suitability for that use. It was not intended for cavers or climbers, and I do not see how it could fit our needs.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
