Taut-line Hitch

Taut-line HitchThis is not the Taut-line Hitch of my Boy Scout manual, but it has some resemblance. Arborists occassionally use the knot shown here and refer to it by that name, but I understand that it is not the most popular knot in their field. I find that it does not serve well as an ascender knot, tending to slip on the ropes that cavers and climbers use. Be sure to tie a stopper knot in the free end, since the end tends to pull through.

Note:
The performance of any ascending knot depends on the diameter, material, construction, and condition of both the main line and the ascender knot sling material. It may also depend on exactly how one ties the knot. Your knot’s performance can easily differ from mine.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
