Drill Presses

Sears/Craftsman 15"

Sears/Craftsman 15"

This is just a basic 15" Sears Craftsman drill press. I use it for work that does not require large holes or high accuracy, and use one of my milling machines if I need either of those capabilities.

What I like

  • Easy to use.

What I dislike

  • It is too light and vibrates when in use.
  • The chuck is low quality and rarely keeps the drill bit from spinning.

Problems

  • The chuck key stripped a tooth and the replacement fits no better than the original.

Other comments

  • I still need to bolt this to the floor. Experience shows that this helps, but does not fully eliminate the vibration.

Post Drill

I saw my first post drill at the Sewickley Water Treatment Plant in PA, and soon mentioned it to a coworker. Surprisingly, he had one that he wanted to part with, so I bought it from him. It is a better conversation piece than it is a functioning tool, but it works better than one might expect. There are no markings on it to tell me who manufactured it or when it was made.

What I like

  • It looks cool!
  • It has an automatic down-feed.

What I dislike

  • It is not really practical compared to power tools.
